A look at the plans currently being constructed or debated in Downtown Columbia.
The start of construction at the Metropolitan Downtown Columbia and the Mall in Columbia have brought a focus back to the development of Columbia's Downtown. As the Downtown Columbia Plan becomes a reality, more and more of the designs presented in past community meetings will begin to appear in the city. Currently, construction projects are underway at the Mall in Columbia, the Warfield area where the Metropolitan is being built, and Clyde's on the waterfront where a $4 million renovation project was announced in December. The move comes after two robberies were reported on the bridge in less than a month.
Howard County Police said Friday they would increase patrols on the Route 29 footbridge in Town Center after two robberies were reported in less than a month on the bridge. A man was reportedly robbed while walking across the Route 29 footbridge around 9 a.m. on Nov. 12 by two suspects who asked the man for a cigarette, then stole his iPhone and wallet, according to police. Police reported there was no indication the suspects were armed. The alleged robbery happened less than a month after a woman reported her iPhone was stolen by three suspects on the footbridge around 8:35 p.m. on Oct. 20. Store manager says they will not be renewing lease at the Mall in Columbia.
The L.L. Bean store at the Mall in Columbia will close on May 31, according to a store manager who spoke with Patch on Wednesday evening. The manager said employees had been notified and that L.L. Bean wouldn’t be signing a new lease at a smaller location at the mall. The manager declined to give her name when asked. "L.L.Bean has been a valued tenant at The Mall in Columbia," said Katie Essing, the mall's general manager in a statement. "We never like to see a retailer leave our property; but when that situation arrives, it provides us with another opportunity to continue to provide great retail options to our shoppers." L.L.
