The Maryland Jockey Club is looking to win state matching funds for the changes.
The Maryland Jockey Club is reviving plans for a major redevelopment of Laurel Park, The Baltimore Sun reports. In a draft capital improvement plan submitted to state officials last week, the MJC outlined some of the steps it hopes to take with the property over the next several years. The club is required to notify the Maryland Racing Commission and the state Office of Budget and Management of its plans in order to qualify for matching funds supported by the state's slot machine revenue. Drivers along U.S. Route 1 in North Laurel were given quite a start Friday morning when they encountered a riderless racehorse heading south along the highway. According to Laurel Park officials, Bullet Catcher—a 4-year-old gelding—escaped from the thoroughbred racing facility around 9 a.m. Moments earlier, the horse had tossed jockey Jeremy Rose as the pair was heading back to the stables at the end of a morning workout, track authorities said. Bullet Catcher then exited through a gate, wandered down Whiskey Bottom Road, and headed south down Route 1. Horse racing industry groups have reached an agreement with Laurel Park to keep racing at the track for another 10 years, Gov. Martin O'Malley announced Friday. The deal—which also covers Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore—includes the Maryland Jockey Club, the Maryland Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association, and the Maryland Horse Breeders Association. It follows a temporary agreement reached between the same parties in 2010. “I applaud the incredible work of all the parties in reaching a deal that retains racing industry jobs and preserves the future of racing in Maryland for years to come," O'Malley said in a statement.
