Laurel Teacher to Stand Trial on Child Abuse Charges

Police charged Susan Burke with 10 counts of second-degree assault in an alleged choking and punching of first grade students.

Susan Burke, former first grade teacher at Greencastle Elementary in Silver Spring, is scheduled to stand trial in Rockville on child abuse charges on Oct. 17, according to online court documents.  Montgomery County Police originally charged Burke, 35, of Laurel, with nine counts of second-degree assault after receiving reports from eight of her first-grade students that she had chocked them at least once.  Police began to investigate Burke on Jan. 7. One of her male students, age 7, told officers at the police sub-station on Briggs Chaney Road that Burke had assaulted him on “numerous occasions,” according to Howard Hersh, a spokesperson for the police department.  Detectives interviewed all 16 of Burke's students and eight victims, ages …

After a Laurel woman was arrested for allegedly assaulting her grade school students in Silver Spring, should teachers be allowed to put their hands on students?

Laurel Woman Accused of Choking, Punching Students

Police believe Greencastle Elementary’s Susan Burke has at least eight victims. She was held on a $75,000 bond Tuesday evening.

Susan Burke, a first grade teacher at Greencastle Elementary School on 13611 Robey Rd., was arrested Tuesday on allegations that she physically assaulted eight of her students. Burke was charged with nine counts of second-degree assault and held on a $75,000 bond.  Police began to investigate Burke, of Laurel, on Jan. 7. One of her male students, age 7, told officers at the police sub-station on Briggs Chaney Road that Burke had assaulted him on “numerous occasions,” according to Howard Hersh, a representative for the police department.  Detectives interviewed all 16 of Burke's students and eight victims, ages 6 and 7, were identified.
