ReplyIt's nice that there's a whole week for teacher appreciation, not just a day.

On the article Long Reach High School on 2013 U.S. News ‘Best High Schools’ List

The "stark divide" is a matter of being in the top one percent versus the top six percent nationally. Being five percent below one of the elite schools in the country is "gap" most schools would envy.

The rankings consist of 21,035 high schools. River Hill, at #165, ranks in the top one percent of high schools in the nation. Long Reach and Hammond at 1219 and 1299, respectively, are in the top six percent of all high schools.
That means that 8 of the 11 high schools in Howard County are in the top 3 percent nationally. Two are in the top six percent. Wilde Lake, although unranked for some reason, actually has better ratings for college readiness, English and Algebra proficiency than Long Reach and Hammond. -
On the article Is it Time to Wave “Bye-bye” to the Wave at Baseball Games?

ReplyI don't see how it could be "banned" - how could you enforce it? Personally, I never participate in the wave because I paid to watch the game, not watch the wave. It should never be going on when It's distracting to the players. If people are going to do it, it should be only between plays or between innings.

ReplyI feel so fortunate that my kids will be going to a school that's "light-years" better than any elementary school that I went to. This what we live in Howard County and pay our taxes for.

The Elkridge library is always very crowded and "picked over". My family often has to drive to other newer and larger Howard County libraries to get what we are looking for. Compare the Savage and Elkridge libraries to the newer and beautiful Miller, Glenwood, East Columbia, and Central libraries. The "Route 1" libraries are obviously the neglected "poor cousins".
The Elkridge library is also much busier than the other "Route 1" library in Savage. It is long overdue for a "makeover".
The Howard County library system has been awarded, for the past few years, the "best library system of it's size". My family definitely feels appreciative of the Howard County schools and libraries and feel fortunate to live here. We look forward to it remaining that way.

Only on a special car, and only if they can fit inside a pet carrier. Amtrak should charge extra for the pets if it costs them more money to have a special car on a train.
